Brilliant and fascinating oil on board

This original oil on board captivates the viewer. This painting is very well set off by an eloborate gilt frame  and glass.

Leader's subjects for landscape vary widely, including both wilderness and rural farmland scenes, with and without people present, mountains, flat land and shore. But perhaps most characteristic and exceptional are his studies of trees, in a perfect evening light, and it is remarkable the degree to which this light is captured even in some black and white etchings of his work.

Leader was extremely popular in Victorian times and his work sold for high prices. Today he is recognized as one of the most accomplished Victorian landscape artists of his day. He usually chose scenes from the Midlands and the Thames valley, although he was also partial to Welsh landscapes, especially around Bettws-y-Coed.
